How can you tell when kippered herring has gone bad? Does it start to smell good?

This post just gave me a flashback. Years ago in the trade there was an old timer nicknamed Trapper that brought in Kippered Herrings for lunch almost every day. My God how he loved them and the rest of us hated them. For coffee break all he ate was graham crackers which he always rubbed together first before eating for some odd reason.
